Session IPA with Salty Caramel

Dry January is a health campaign that gets more and more awareness. People (trying to) get rid of alcohol in the first month of
the year. Some others consider drinking less as a New Year’s resolution. But that cannot be an option for many beer lovers. For them, we brought a light beer recipe. But don’t worry, you don’t have to drink a watery beer, we fill it with huge load of hops.

Some say there is no such beers style as Session IPA, as BJCP has no such category yet, it is simply a well hopped Pale Ale. There
might be no significant difference, but while an APA has a moderate hoppiness and maltiness, a Session IPA is almost like its “big brother” – a hop-forward, but lower alcohol beer (ABV: 3.0-5.0%) that you can enjoy anytime without getting drunk.

The point of the recipe is to give a nice malty flavour by using highly kilned base malts (Vienna, Munich) and some other crystals too, mash at higher temperature to produce non-fermentable sugars giving some body to your beer (no beta-amylase rest is required) and add all the hops as late as you can to create unique hop aromas. Let’s brew it!

Results: Smooth malt flavour, refreshing hoppiness. Thirst-quenching and easy to drink. The freshest the best!

This is the first time I used our brand new specialty malt – PlatinumSwaen©SaltedCaramel. In this ratio I did not taste any pronounced saltiness. I expected what we usually get by adding salt to any food – it normally strengthens certain flavours. It
turned out very well in this recipe. This Session IPA is smoother and some tastes, especially hoppiness are more intensive. So at this % you can consider the variety as a flavor enhancer that help you brewing more smooth and complex beers.
